We just finished another interlocking, landscaping and porch design in Toronto this week and we wanted to share the project details with you.
When we arrived at the project several weeks ago, a beautiful upscale neighbourhood on the outskirts of Toronto we found a backyard that was in real need for change and improvement.
As you can see from the pictures there is an in ground pool at the backyard and around it was an old interlocking area that was sinking and falling apart as well as a large deck that took most of the space of the backyard and a 6 foot fence that fell apart.
One of the challenges we had was the fact that the house was of lower grade then the neighbours and that there was no proper irrigation and retaining wall between the backyard and the neighbour’s back yard and therefore a lot of the dirt and soil from the neighbours garden came through under the fence and into the in ground pool.
First thing we had to do was to demolish the old fence, the old interlocking area and the old deck and then start the backyard landscaping design from scratch.
Privacy fence and retaining wall design
We started the project by building a 6ft privacy fence made of pressure treated wood and using 6×6 pressure treated posts then we built a 1 ft tall retaining wall from interlocking stone around the fence to prevent the low grade issue and movement of soil and dirt from the neighbours as well as laid down whipping tiles between the fence and the retaining wall to collect the water and divert it away from the pool and patio area. This area between the fence and the retaining wall became a large flower bed, about 80 linear ft long.
After we finished building the privacy fence and the interlocking retaining wall we moved to the next phase of the project which was the designing and building the interlocking patio area.
Interlocking and landscaping design
The patio area was made of interlocking paving stones and was about 600 sqft area. Part of the interlocking patio design was a built in drainage system made out of 3 drainage areas that is designed to collect the rain water coming into the backyard and prevent it from draining into the in ground pool.
Cedar Patio deck design
The next stage of the interlocking and landscaping project was to replace the old patio deck area and build a new cedar deck that was smaller and more suitable to the backyard.
The new patio deck was built of cedar and was using 2 6×6 cedar posts to support it and for the railings
we used aluminum pickets and cedar handrail and post.
The deck stairs were made of cedar as well and feature a built in LED deck light system with power saving sensor that turns on at night time.
All in all the landscaping and interlocking project was a real nice one and the home owner was very happy with the work and told us that we completely transformed his old backyard to a new more beautiful and usable backyard.
