Since the mid-1980’s, cellular PVC has been growing steadily in popularity as a preferred building material for decks and railings, with the most well known brand being AZEK deck boards.
Toronto Decks and Fence Company is the premier outdoor construction company in the Greater Toronto Area, and has designed and installed dozens of AZEK decks over the last decade.
One of the reasons for the surge in popularity for alternate building materials for decks, railings, and other outdoor projects is largely due to their ease of maintenance and sustainability (their ability to be manufactured from mostly renewable resources) compared to wood or other materials.
AZEK© decks are made from synthetic wood that has the texture and appearance of real wood, but can last for decades with only minimal maintenance.
AZEK© decks, like other synthetic woods, are made from a combination of sawdust, chalk, and chemicals that are subjected to extremely high pressure, resulting in a material with the same density, hardness, and texture as natural wood. It can also be planed, bored, nailed, sawed, painted, stained or polished and is impervious to moisture or rot. Synthetic wood will not combust at normal temperatures.
Canadian seasons are harsh, from brutal, freezing winters, to high humidity and high temperatures in the summer, so AZEK decks are an ideal option for eco-conscious consumers looking for a stylish, affordable building material that can withstand the worst Mother Nature can throw at it.
Here are some common questions we get from our Toronto area customers about AZEK decks.
- I’ve heard that synthetic wood decks are hard to clean. How are AZEK© decks cleaned? The best way to clean this kind of building material (and AZEK decks) is by using any all surface deck cleaner, or even mild dishwashing liquid in warm water. Remember, because its texture is similar to wood, dirt may build up in the grooves, requiring a bit more effort to clean.
- A salesman at a lumber yard told me synthetic wood decks will fade over time, is that true? Like any building material subjected to different weather extremes, AZEK© decks will lose some of their colour over time but that in no way affects its durability.
- Will AZEK© decks collect mold? While this type of material is impervious to surface water penetration, it can accumulate mold from sitting water or long term exposure to moisture – the same with wood or plastic lawn furniture, for instance. The mold can be cleaned using any all purpose deck cleaner.
